Trying to understand the attendance requirement.  I live in Atl, GA. and am new to homeschooling.  Does anyone know if EACH day MUST be 4.5 hours?  Seems like 180 days is a long school year when you take into account holidays, vacations.

I live just north of Atlanta (Bartow county). Yes, it
must be 4.5hrs, however........     homeschooling is
more than book learning. Playing tag is PE. Going to
the zoo is Science. Going to the store is Math. Watching
PBS can be History..... Get my drift? LOL!

As for 180 days... public school children go this many
days, too. When you fill out your intent to homeschool
form, make sure you give yourself a full 12 months for
your school year (ex: 8/2/2009-8/1/2010). This gives you
a ton of time to get done what you want to do. If you
finish early, no big deal!

GA is really easy to homeschool in! Good Luck!

At our local school, they consider driving time part of the 4.5 hours.  For example, if the child is in a skiing class and a bus full of students drive to the mountain, they consider that hour of driving part of class time.

Schools and classes waste a lot of time that homeschoolers don't.  They consider that part of wasted time class time.

My child's learning does not last only 4.5 hours a day.  Learning is a life long process.  My children learned all the time.

Perhaps this is wrong, but my goal was to have about 150 hours a year of structured learning.  That would be equivalent to one carnagie unit in my eyes.  But when my children were younger, I did not even consider the hours.  Junior high and high school is when I started to keep track of hours.  Only in high school was everthing document.  Don't know if that was even necessary.

Hmm, so basically I need to arrange 5 hours a day of
completely mindless video games to cut my boy down to 4.5
hours of learning per day
