As a new forum feature, Homeschool.com has invited
CollegeGuide.org, to participate in an interactive forum, with you, our
members. CollegeGuide.org is a one-stop resource for information on choosing
the right college, surviving and thriving at the college of your choice, and
guidance and assistance beyond the undergraduate experience. These resources
are designed for students, parents, guidance counselors, and anyone interested
in the state of higher education in America today--particularly in the quality
of teaching and the curriculum, and the state of academic freedom at any of the 200
individual schools that CollegeGuide has profiled. Please feel free to ask any questions you
might have about the colleges in their database (www.collegeguide.org).
**Of course, they
cannot (in all good conscience) answer questions about schools they have not
carefully investigated.**

What are some of the ways homeschoolers can demonstrate their abilities when applying for college? What ways can parents help their children be prepared? What are you looking for in transcripts? Are colleges interested in homeschoolers?

Dear Lawrence and Tiffany, First of all, let me address your general question. In the past 10 years or so, colleges have become increasingly aware of the superior preparation received by homeschooled students--so you needn't feel anxiety on that point. At Collegeguide.org, we have a listing of the Top Five colleges for homeschoolers, which you find here: http://www.collegeguide.org/question_answer.aspx?id=fa0547ba -da22-4545-b190-85e52b1a3b1c
We also have an article exploring the college application process for homeschooled students here: http://www.collegeguide.org/itemdetail.aspx?item=F6837A32-96 7F-4D49-A174-72A13B6560BF
These articles are free, of course. I hope they answer your questions.

I've been told that in order for my hs son to receive financial aid for college, he has to have an accredited high school diploma -- that colleges WILL accept homeschooler's, but without that accredited diploma, they aren't eligible for financial aid.
In most instances, I'm aware that a GED qualifies -- but my son cannot take and pass the GED exam due to significant disabilities. He's smart, but he can't test.
Have I been misinformed?

Yes, you have been misinformed.
Most homeschoolers apply to and are accepted to colleges with diplomas and transcripts from their parents. And yes, hs applicants receive financial aid without diplomas from accredited schools.

Wow. I sure hope that's true.
We checked with a college in the east that has a sub-specialty with special needs kids. It was that college that told us he would not be elligible for financial aid without the accredited diploma. I've been upset about this for the past 6 months, unable to afford online tuition from the various online schools that are accredited.
Thank you! I'm start looking in a new direction.

Wow, 4 of the top 5 colleges for homeschoolers are Christian schools? I
guess I have to assume that Collegeguide goes for stereotypes.

I'm looking to find this out as well! It seems like this is a great topic to discuss and I'm looking to see what comes from future research.
