Hi there! My name is Chrysie; my husband and I have made the decision to homeschool our 11 year old daughter. The first thing we need to do is pull her out of public school. I am wondering if anyone has any advice how to do that? I'm not the most confrontational kind of person and I'm terrified of saying the wrong thing or causing a scene. LOL Has anyone pulled their children out mid year? How did you go about doing so? THANX!!!

Chrysie,
Welcome to the forum!
I cannot answer your question because the process varies by state. Here in NC, for example, you file a Notice of Intent to open a home school with the state. As soon as it is processed (usually within 2 weeks), you can simply go to the school and withdraw your child, typically without confrontation.
Most states have a fairly simple process and unless you already have a rancorous relationship with the school, you should be able to do this in a dignified manner. It is important to understand your state law to give you confidence.
Many many people pull children out mid year - I know that they do here in Charlotte so that is not at all unusual.
Where do you live?

We are in California. I've already gotten a Private School Affidavit and she is already enrolled in a program online. I was just wondering if anyone in California on here has pulled a child out mid year and how they did it.

Welcome.
Yes, many people have done that. You will want to officially withdraw your dd from her school by sending a letter--preferably certified, so that you have proof that someone at the school was actually notified that your dd is enrolled in a private school; otherwise you may get a visit from a truant officer.
Out of curiosity, what kind of "on-line program" is your dd enrolled in?

We have chosen The Jubilee Academy through Learning by Grace. I mailed a letter today (I used the sample letter on the Homeschool Association of California website... http://www.hsc.org/cumrecords#sampleletter.html ), certified, informing them. But I wasn't sure if there was more required, like physically going to the school to withdraw her. Ironically, this was the week we were planning to withdraw her, but she came down with H1N1, so she's out anyway (got a dr note to excuse her so they wouldn't consider her truant). They will receive the certified letter Thurs or Fri. Should I go down Monday anyway or let the letter do the talking? I feel so silly for not knowing how to go about this, I think I've over researched and made myself anxious about what to do. LOL Thanks for all the help :)

You do not need to go the school, unless your dd has to return books or anything. Otherwise, let the letter do the talking.
FYI, your enrolling your dd in Jubilee has zero legal standing. If you have any conversations with school officials, don't even bring that up. It's your affidavit that makes you "legal."
California does not specify any requirements for withdrawing a child from school.
I *strongly* recommend HSLDA membership.

I have joined HSLDA (put a rush on my membership) and got an affidavit a couple weeks ago when we decided to do this. She left her books at school last Friday, so we're clear there. Thanks for all of the advice.

I pulled mine out in Nov. 2004. I was totally worried about it because I'm non-confontational too. To my pleasant surprise, they didn't really seem to care. All that worrying for nothing.
Best wishes!

Well done! I'm sure you'll do just fine.
What part of California do you live? I was in San Jose for 16 years, and in San Diego before that.

I just wanted to let you know of our experience w/ Jubilee...
My son did Jubilee last year. The overall experience was fair, but he doesn't like everything to be done online. Jubilee is the "parent led" school of LbG. This means YOU will grade any free response assignments... this was difficult for me bc if I was not familiar with the assignment, then I had very little direction in which to grade... (In English he had to write essays based on the reading assignments; one being Prelandra by CS Lewis. I have never read the book and therefore didn't know if his response to the question was appropriate. What I did instead is graded the work based on grammar (sentence structure, spelling, "flow") - which I am NO expert on either. Also, in Spanish, he'd have to translate words or write a dialog... I know very little Spanish so grading those assignments required me to pull up the Google translator... and for the dialogs -- I wasn't sure if they were even phrased correctly (I know German puts the verb at the end of the sentence)). We also had a situation where we had to wait 3 months for a replacement disk...
Anyway, I hope things go more smoothly for you/your daughter with Jubilee. Keep in mind if you have any issues they do have their parents forum but that doesn't really help for immediate responses...

Thankfully, Leah is in 6th grade, so languages aren't an option right now. We are playing catch up at this point, doing blocks of each class per day to get caught up to the 2nd quarter. So far she is doing ok. Her first English book is Julie of the Wolves, which I read a hundred years ago, so grading shouldn't be too hard. I am still waiting on the english class disks since we were sent the wrong ones to start. She likes it a lot though, even gets herself up and online before I wake up! I'm sure the novelty will wear off eventually... but for now, I'm very happy with how it's going. School already tried the truant card, called and told them to get their crap together this morning. We'll see if they do....
