Is anyone using Sonlight? I am thinking about using the P4/5 science package. I thought I could buy the teacher's instructions and the library has 6 out of the 8 books. My question is, how are the activities set up? Like one book every two weeks or a book a week along with activities?

Gee, would love to see an answer to this question. I
like the whole literature based curriculum as I am such a
voracious reader. But I know we can't afford to buy all
those books. First of all we already have some that are
included in different packages. And second I am sure I
could find so many of them in the library. I was also
thinking of just buying the teacher's guide and perhaps a
couple of the books I can't find. But some info on how it
is set up would be wonderful.
I don't usually look through old posts but I was looking
for some other info and saw this one never received any
answers so I thought I would see if we could. Or maybe
you already found out Kgianforti. If so, would you care
to share, pleeeaase.

I never found out precisely how everything was set up but based on the Teacher's Manual sample on the Sonlight website, it appears a bit choppy (referring to the science specifically). Though I am still interested in the science package...perhaps for next fall.
I think your dd is younger than mine and the curriculum advisers are adamant that my 3.5 year old dd is too young to handle P4/5. She is doing fine with Moving Beyond the Page's 5-7 Environment Concept so I figured P4/5 would be just fine too(I base purchases on her cognitive age anyways). Sonlight does have a forum where you can post for free and can respond to your own posts, but you have to pay to respond to anyone else's posts!

I have used Sonlight some. It's fun to receive the whole package and
have everything there that you need, but if you can't afford it all
then I would get the teacher manual and any books that your library
doesn't carry.
You will need to look ahead in the manual and make sure you order your
books from the library ahead of time. It depends on the age and the
subject, but, yes, they do go through a book a week or every other
week. At the age you have, you will be doing all the reading to them.
Once you get the manual, you can see how many books or activities there
are each week. You can adapt it too and double up or slow down where
you want.
Sonlight is a great program. They are always listening to their customers and improving all the time. Hope this helps.

Heidijo- Thanks for the input. I had thought about doing
that, but felt sort of guilty thinking of buying the manual
but not buying the books from them to do the lessons.
And, Kgianforti, it's good to know I should probably wait
a bit for my dd as she isn't even 3 yet.
Thanks.

I really like just using lots of picture books for this age. I even use them a lot for my son who is 8. Unless you have plenty of money to spend on books or you really need something to follow day by day, you could save a lot of money using picture books. There will be plenty of time to spend money on curriculum later. I have 3 teenagers now and, believe me, they are expensive!
