It is taking me awhile, but I am slowly getting through
those videos, they are really good, as Chris said. Thank
you for posting the links.
It is taking me a while to get through the book, The Way
They Learn. Wondering what you are thinking of it if
you got it, Erica. I also have the other books available
now, just going to be a while working through them all.

I am interested in "learning" more about unschooling. I am not sure what it consists of... is it literature based? Similar to Charlotte Mason?

The definition of unschooling will vary from person to person. To me, unschooling is more a frame of mind and how one views education in general than it is specific methods, books, or activities.
Basically unschoolers have the attitude that maximizing unplanned teachable moments, dropping everything and running with what presents itself that day, is the best way for a person to learn.
To be honest, I don't personally know of anyone who fits that description exactly. What we did was to "have a plan for the day" and we would use that plan if nothing else presented itself. For example, when my wife was called for jury duty, 'civics' became the lesson for the day as she took the kids with her (and told the judge that she did NOT want to be excused because of the kids - the judge LOVED it). But if she didn't have jury duty, then the kids did their math workbooks, reading, etc. as 'planned'.

If you want to know about unschooling, you will want to read John Holt's books: How Children Learn, How Children Fail, Instead of Education, What do I do on Monday?, and Teach Your Own. "Unschooling" was a term that John Holt coined, meaning understanding in your heart of hearts that education happens all the time, not just during a predetermined "school year" with a plan for what you're going to teach when, and especially not a plan that follows a scope and sequence determined by people who don't know your dc from Adam's cat. IOW, it's learning that doesn't look anything like school...unschool. See? :-)

No problem, I fully understand that. I was actually going
to post more, but got too busy. Assuming you found them
okay. The ones being referred to were the ones of the Home
School Association of CA 2009 Conference in Sacramento.

JT Gaddy- just wanted to let you know of some other books
I have read within the past year as I have been
researching homeschooling. I seem to be drawn to
unschooling lately. Really like the book The
Unschooling Handbook by Mary Griffith. And
Homeschooling Our Children, Unschooling Ourselves
by Alison McKee.
It was actually a post a while ago, I think by Ellie,
that suggested John Holt's books How Children Fail
and How Children Learn and I decided to read them,
real eyeopeners. I also read his book Learning All
the Time, which is one Ellie didn't mention that I
really enjoyed.
After reading these books I can see how important it is
that you catch the interest of the child so they can be
truly motivated to learn. I don't see myself becoming a
"radical" unschooler, but I will definitely be more
relaxed and focus on the children's interest. The big
thing I understand with unschooling, is that life is
learning and learning is life. What we as parents see as
just playing around can be a great learning experience.

No problem kewkew, you're welcome.
I only got around to reading the first 3 chapters of the book. My husband accidentally returned the book along with other previously borrowed library books. I'll pick it up again sometime when I'm not already in the middle of several books.

Ooops! I guess that happens. And I know exactly what
you mean about being in the middle of several others.
