The full article can be read at www.hlsda.org. It's nice to see it was a dramatic turnaround!

This is a great thing. It puts California up there with Texas and Illinois: homeschools equivalent to private schools, which are unregulated (although in California, private schools file an affidavit annually, but there are no requirements for testing, graduation, teacher qualifications, # of school days, and so on).

I'm not so sure that all of the schools in CA got that memo. We've had such a bad time here in our school district that we've decided to try something different. We enrolled our son in CAVA (online/homeschooling) and we're two weeks into it and love it.. however we got a knock on our door today by the school which informed us that we now have a meeting at the school district because our son is excessively truant.
That's funny, when traditional school started we kept getting phone calls by the school (automated ones) saying our son was not in school. We kept calling the school back telling them that our son was no longer enrolled in school there, and to please get their records straight and stop calling us, we know that he's not in school (at least YOUR school). Now the letter we got says that we HAVE to show up at this meeting. My wife called this person who told us that if we don't, the police would be out to visit us. Even after explaining it to her, it's like they don't care. My wife gave them the information, explained that our son was not going to a school in their district, that he's not online/homeschooled and gave them the information (both the teachers information and the schools) and was told that we have to call them and they have to call the school district. While I'm ok with that, it's kind of stupid I think. If you're not going to take my word for it, what makes you think I'm not gonna have joe plumber call you up to pretend that he's from a fake school? How dumb is that. Here, here's the info, YOU call to satisify your own interests and YOU figure out why you can't get YOUR paperwork right. Why is it now my responsibility to do your work? My tax dollars still go to pay the public school system, you'd like I could ask a little work be done on my behalf even though I'm not really using it (well I am but still)...
Has anyone else gone through this? I don't really want to take off work to go to this stupid meeting since I'm not going to be real happy or polite to them I think considering the facts... but their threat of jail doesn't make me real happy either (wow, how is my son going to get an education then?) They going to try to take him away from me because he's being home schooled? What's next??

end:
If you're not already a member, I would STRONGLY suggest joining HSLDA.

Chris, he can't join HSLDA because his dc is enrolled in a public school program and so is not legally a homeschooler. FYI.
